How to Downgrade your iPhone 2.0 to 1.14 [Updated]

Posted by MoiN 20 July, 2008

This is a great guide on how to downgrade your iPhone from 2.0 to 1.1.4. Here’s a step by step guide written by _X_ for anyone whose looking to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.14!

Requirements (With Download Links):

iTunes 7.5 (You don’t need iTunes 7.7 for this)
iLiberty+Windows / Mac Version
iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw firmware -
KiPhone Windows / Mac (Patched version of ZiPhone) -
(Update: More KiPhone Download Links - Download for Windows - Download for MAC OS X)

Step 1:

Uninstall iTunes 7.7 if you have it and restart your computer

Step 2:

Install iTunes 7.5, iLiberty+ & KiPhone. Make sure only iTunes is running.

Step 3:

Your iPhone should be in 2 states, either stuck on the “Slide to make emergency calls” screen, or you tried to restore before and it’s stuck on the new look “connect to iTunes” screen. Either way, it’s fine.

Enter the phone in DFU mode (You must have the iPhone connected to the computer and iTunes running). To do this, hold the power & the home button down for 9 seconds.

Why 9? Well people say 10, but it depends how slow you are at counting. Too short and it doesn’t work, too long and the apple logo appears.

When you hit about 6/7 the screen should turn off, leave it for 2 more seconds and release the power button, STILL holding the home button. If all went well, you should NOT see an apple logo, the screen should be dead. Keep holding home until windows/Mac informs you that it’s found new hardware, OR iTunes tells you that your iPhone is in recovery mode. Remember, screen should be blank.

If you see an apple logo, repeat the process for less time until you get it right. Took me a little time.

Step 4:

Shift/Option click the restore button in iTunes and select the iPhone1,1_1.1.4 firmware you downloaded.
Fingers crossed it should restore back to 1.1.4.

However, you WILL get an error message when restore is complete, something like (1005) or (1150) I can’t remember. That’s a good sign.

Step 5:

Your phone now should be “stuck” in restore mode, you should see the old type “connect to iTunes” screen.

Close iTunes and run iLiberty+. Click the Other Tools tab and select Jump out of recovery mode.
Keep your eye on the bottom right of the Liberty window; it should change from a flashing recovery mode, to disconnected, within about 5/10 seconds. If it does, that’s a good sign. If it doesn’t, you may need to hard reset the iPhone (holding power and home until screen goes off) and try again.

Once it kicks it out of recovery mode you should see the slide for emergency calls screen on 1.1.4.

After investigation, we realized, you don’t need to kick the phone out of recovery mode to use KiPhone. So you can skip this step altogether.

Step 6:

This is crucial and here’s a little back-story.

When you updated to 2.0, what a lot of people didn’t realize, me included, is that it includes a new baseband file. This is the file which allows your iPhone to make/receive calls, text’s etc. This is what caused me hours and hours of trouble as I couldn’t figure out a way to erase it. The answer was sent to me on another forum and that is,

KiPhone!!

Now here’s the problem. This guide is what I did up to this point, but what I then went on to do was to jailbreak the iPhone, Google some more and then I found I needed KiPhone.
You shouldn’t need to jailbreak it to run KiPhone but if it fails to work, try it.

Run KiPhone and select downgrade baseband and debug boot. Hit start and your iPhone should restart and you should see lines of scrolling txt. It took a while, 5 minutes or so. (The only way I know of seeing if it worked instantly was by jailbreaking it first, that choice is up to you). Once done you will need to restore the iPhone one more time to 1.1.4 using iTunes. Shift clicking restore should do it, no need to put into recovery mode. (Why do you need to restore again? If you just jailbreak after downgrading the baseband, you can receive calls but not make any, only send texts but not receive any).

The test if it works is when restore is done; it should give you NO errors.

*If for some reason KiPhone crashes out, restore the 1.1.4 firmware again. I found this problem too but a restore fixed the errors. But failing that, and if you cant be bothered, try simply restarting your computer. Solved it for some people.

Step 7:

Using iLiberty+, select the extra repro’s using the advanced menu. This will give you further options like installing installer.app or reallocating ringtones etc.

Dont forget to click download after you have selected the ones you want!

I hope this helps and once again, I would like to give full credit to “_X_” for writing this wonderful guide for us :) - If you have any questions on downgrading your iPhone 2.0 to 1.14, feel free to ask!

July 23, 2008

OH MY GOD!

_X_ and MoiN you two are fucking legends!!!! This tutorial worked for me and I was able to downgrade my “SIM Locked” iPhone from 2.0 to 1.1.4

Damn iTunes asked me to upgrade and pressed Enter accidentally without looking! Silly me.

Thank you so much for this helpful post!

For those who are stuck in Recovery Mode, keep trying and if it doesn’t seem to be working … Hard Reset and SHIFT+RESTORE again on iTunes and try kicking it out of Restore mode again. That’s how i got it out of restore mode after failing around 20-25 times.

Thanks again and good luck all

I have a few questions if someone can answer them:

1. kiphone is suppose to take 5 minutes to dowgrade the baseband…is this confirmed? I can’t tell if it hangs.

2. what if i mess up someplace in the middle, is this recoverable or did i just flushed my iphone down the drain?

3. is the bootloader reversible if i ever need 3.9 or 4.6 again?

Posted by liz
July 23, 2008

liz

kiphone shouldnt take 5 minutes. But check the status on the screen. There should be small text which updates and tells you its status.
If you mess up, shouldnt be a problem,I messed up and my iphone is now perfect.

In regards to the bootloader, I dont worry about such things, I let iLibery+ deal with it.

And this is for everyone, I would seriously avoid upgrading to 2.0. There are so many problems with it at the moment it isnt worth it. Not even for the apps, which are quite poor to be honest.
Serious lagg, crashes, glitches and loss of wifi reception are just some of the symptoms with this new version. AVOID

July 24, 2008

I keep getting an error 1604 after step 4 (I know it says there should be an error, but it says error 1005 or 1050) and iLiberty does not recognize there is a phone plugged in…all the buttons are grayed out.

Any help? Thanks.

Posted by Val
July 25, 2008

Alright, I was able to finally get past the error 1604. The problem was that the Apple Mobile service or something along those lines was not started. I followed the direction here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567

Now it’s in recovery mode, but iLiberty+ isn’t working to make it jump out of recovery mode. I’ll keep trying and report back.

Posted by Val
July 25, 2008

I was able to get out of recovery mode by restoring to 1.1.4 again, then when I ran iLiberty, it kicked it out of recovery on the first try.

Now…Im trying to run KiPhone and it says “This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the developers”.

I tried to jailbreak it, then tried KiPhone again, and same error.

Posted by Val
July 25, 2008

Alright…FINALLY got it done and working.

The KiPhone error went away after resetting the computer but then KiPhone still wouldn’t work…it said it was loading some file but wouldn’t do anything, the iPhone was not resetting or responding in any way. I ended up starting iTunes, which recognized the iPhone and seemed to have “turned it on” for the computer to see. I tried KiPhone again and it worked this time around.

Posted by Val
July 25, 2008

Val and others. I found this out the other day. You don’t need to actually kick it out of recovery mode to use KiPhone. So don’t panic if you cant.

In regards to the KiPhone crash, restore the iphone AGAIN. That did the same thing to me. Its fickle at best. Trial and error.

Posted by chinmay
July 26, 2008

hey okay this is what i did

please make sure your simcard isnt in the phone and the phone is connected the whole time.

1- i downloaded the itunes 7.5 and unistalled itunes 7.7

2- i restarted my P.C.

3- i installed itunes 7.5 and put it in the “my music” folder and i also name it “itunesbackup”

4- i opened it and by now it should just finish installing and you should be able to use it.

5- connect your iphone to your PC itunes should say something about how it cant recognize the iphone because you need to install itunes 7.7

6- press OK not exit and then put your iphone in DFU mode.

7. DFU mode is not like recovery mode. Recovery mode is when you see the itunes sign and a teether.

8- to get to DFU mode just simply press the off button and the home button at the same time for 10 seconds.

9- when the screen turns off take your finger off of the “off” button on the iphone but keep holding the home button until your computer or itunes tells you it has discovered new hardware.

10- then you press shirt and restore on the itunes

11- you select firmware 1.1.4
then your phone should get back to recovery mode

12- then you jailbreak your iphone with iliberty+

13- then you use winpwn to downgrade your baseband, you press browse .ipsw and select the 1.1.4 firmware again.

14- then go back to iliberty= and select all the check boxes and press “go for it”

15- and in a few minutes you will be good to go :D

just pop in a sim card and you will be able to access your iphone :D

if you have any questions just email me to drprtinkerbell@gmail.com

aim: drprtinkerbell

i will be more than happy to do it step by step with you :]

good luck

Posted by alannah
July 28, 2008

Sorry to come across as rude but, did you actually read my tutorial?
Read step 6. You cant get any network because the baseband, the part which does all the signal, calls, txts etc, is the new version. This was put on with the 2.0 firmware. To use the network you need to DOWNGRADE the baseband which step 6 explains how to do.

Hey guys, just got my 2.0 downgraded to 1.1.4. I must say, it is a long and frustrating journey, so for those still trying, have patience.

For those who are stuck after installing iTunes 7.5, where iTunes does not detect your iPhone AT ALL, try restarting your computer or switching USB ports. Then set your iPhone to DFU mode as per normal, keeping the home button pressed until your computer detects the iPhone in DFU mode. It will pop up in iTunes once the driver is recognised.

That got mine working right. Thanks everybody here for the help!

Just a few more pointers to take note:

- If KiPhone doesn’t work, restore your iPhone to 1.1.4 again, close iTunes and imeediately start KiPhone and start the process.

- It is NOT necessary to kick your iPhone out of recovery mode (using iLiberty, etc) before running KiPhone. It is OK if the restore mode logo stays there until you finish jailbraiking.

- KiPhone doesn’t really take 5 minutes, but the program doesn’t show any progress bar. You’ll know that you’re done when your iPhone restarts after the lines of scrolling texts.

- If you’re like me and find that iTunes 7.5 isn’t even opening even after you rename your music library, go to your music directory, find the file named ‘iTunes Library.itl’ and rename the file extension to ‘iTunes Library.itlold’. After you reinstall iTunes 7.7, delete the new ‘iTunes Library.itl’ and delete the ‘-old’ extension from the previous file.

- You don’t need to worry about anything else after KiPhone, just let iLiberty+ do the rest. Then restore your backup, load in your media and you’re good to go!

Hope this helps. Cheers.

Just in case anybody is curious as to why I’m downgrading, here’s some issues that I faced:

- The backup process hangs halfway
- There are still more apps in the old version that in the new Cydia and AppStore combined
- Mail just crashes everytime I open it. Can’t change any of the Mail preferences in settings.
- Calendar and Contacts doesn’t seem to sync right. Sometimes can’t even sync data.
- The sound is sometimes cut off or cuts in when I start/stop a track or any function that makes sound.
- Apps from iTunes AppStore can’t sync to the iPhone.
- Connecting to a wifi connection is significantly slower.
- Sometimes can’t scroll down to the end of an SMS, hence can’t reply.

And a lot of other minor bugs. I am frankly disappointed at how the new firmware can have so many bloody irritating bugs. Until I see a significant increase in apps in AppStore and the firmware has been upgraded to a more stable version, I’m very much happy with my 1.1.4.

Dear All
i had successfully unlock my iphone followes the instruction given from step 1-6. For step no 6 i had tried to used iliberty but failed, tried winpwn and also failed. So the last choice i tried ziphone and it’s successfully unlock mine.

But after that i noticed one problem. My iphone not ringing during receiving call and same goes to sms 9only in vibration mode). If i tried testing the ringtone inside the setting the sound ok but not when tere’s incoming call/sms. When i slide to unlock also no sound, normally we will hear the unlock sound

Kindly assist. I’m almost give up after stuck in 2.0 for almost 4 days and after it recover this problem come along. Hopefully this the only one…

Thanks

@ Hazel
Try restoring your phone again, then at step 7, check all the necessary options (including the ones downloaded from repo) that has to do with baseband. I had that problem on Day 2 when I first got the iPhone, but restoring it seems to have fixed it.

I am stuck with Cable/Itunes logo…

I have downgraded 7.7 to 7.5

But iTunes is not recognizing my iPhone. I don’t get an option to restore in itunes.

What am I doing wrong? How do I make 7.5 recognize my itunes?

Posted by Jay

Try different usb ports. But dont forget, DFU mode looks exactly like the iphone is powered off. So keep trying. You might just have the iphone switched off. Follow the DFU guide I made. Keep trying.

Posted by _X_
August 3, 2008

Repeated after connecting to another USB port. To put it in DFU mode, I pressed both home and power buttons for 9 seconds as specified by you. I released power button and continued to hold home button for more than 2 minutes. No luck… How long should it take to make iTunes recognize?

I belive, the phone is in DFU mode but not recognized by iTunes. I started iLiberty and the “DFU Mode” at bottom right corner is flashing.

I pressed home and power buttons for 10 seconds again and it seems like going out of DFU mode that time. iLiberty also doesn’t show “DFU Mode”.

So, DFU setting seems to be working fine, but iTunes is not recognizing. Not sure what else is missing.

Previously i tried using iliberty but it hang. Tried more than 3 times and that’s make me give up ang switch to iphone. Any tip why iliberty hang when “Booting device into recovery mode”. The percentage just shown zero even after i had wait for 1 hour. How long suppose this booting takes time?

Dear Jay
I had same problem like u before. U have yo make sure to count until 9 or to(depends to ur counting speed), so after 9 u should release the power button, keep on holding the home button unti, itunes detect ur iphone in recovery mode.

If u see the apple logo, means it fail, try again until ur iphone screen totally blank

U can do u it dude, i’m also previously stuck at this stage. after google than i found this wonderful tutorial….:-)

August 4, 2008

Dear hazel

The necessary options should include all of the options in the standard tab (you can exclude Cydia if you want). Then in the advanced tab, under ‘downloadable’, you should need installer, BSDsubsystem and OpenSSH.

When iLiberty works right, it should tell you to disconnect then reconnect your iPhone. Then it will upload its stuff onto your iPhone (the percentage bar appears here), which will then reboot itself. iLiberty won’t do anything else from there, everything will be run from the iPhone itself.

It’s not supposed to take long. If it does, try to restore again and repeat the process.

Best of luck!

August 7, 2008

Dear Han,

Which one should be included bettween all these
-Reflash Baseband to version 04.01.13_G(BL 3.9 only)
-Reflash Baseband to version 04.02.13_G(BL 3.9 only)
-Reflash Baseband to version 04.03.13_G(BL 3.9 only)
-Reflash Baseband to version 04.04.05_G(BL 3.9 only)

Thanks

Posted by hazel
August 7, 2008

Dear Hazel
For your reference, below are the options that I included for iLiberty+:
- Activate 1.0.2-1.1.4
- AppSupport Patch for 1.1.2-1.1.4
- BootNeuter
- BSD Subsystem
- Cydia
- Downgrade bootloader from 4.6 to 3.9B
- Fix mobile folder permission
- Installer
- International support for iPhone 1.1.4
- OpenSSH
- Relocate fonts and ringtones
- Unlock 03.14.08_G - 04.04.05_G
- Youtube fix

I don’t think that reflashing the baseband is necessary, since it looks more like a precaution and I’m not sure which version your iPhone is currently using.

If your problem still persists, try using a different 1.1.4 restore file from another source.

Jennifer,

Thanks for instructions. I have followed your instructions with few variations and my phone is back in working condition now.

Step 13 –> I have used KiPhone to downgrade baseband
Step 14 –> ZiPhone to do final work to enable phone..

Thanks.

This will make someone’s day (or really late night as the case with me):

I was using a 2G iPhone unlocked and jailbroken to 2.0 using pwnage. I tried to downgrade as per above and I was getting error 1604 after putting iPhone into DFU. iTunes would detect it and let me run ‘restore’ (with 1.1.4) but after a couple minutes it would return with the 1604 error in iTunes and my iPhone would show the pineapple then cartoon Steve Jobs saying ‘npebea’. I was using a MacBook Air so I read in my frantic research to try a different computer so I tried using my desktop iMac. That did nothing for me …. same results.

So I finally came across a blog here (http://www.brooksgarrett.com/hacking/downgrading-iphone-1g-20-to-114) with a suggestion to delete the folder found here /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

This folder must be deleted manually (even if you used AppZapper or similar to uninstall iTunes 7.7). You will need to enter your system password to delete it since it is a framework. Be sure you are quit out of iTunes when you remove this file and relaunch iTunes.

Next I shift option clicked restore in itunes with the iPhone in DFU, selected 1.1.4 and it worked perfectly - giving me the much coveted error 1015. I then ran the 1.1.4 again and followed instructions as was suggested at http://www.brooksgarrett.com which is closely similar to the steps found here by moin and _x_.

If I had known to manually delete MobileDevice.framework folder, the whole downgrade process would have only taken 15 - 30 minutes instead of the 5 hours spent researching.

Good luck to all … hope this helps someone and maybe even saves a wall from a flying iPhone.

Thanks Moin and all who posted their experiences.

You guys are the absolute BEST!!! I have just followed your instructions to the letter and IT WORKS!!! The aniticipation was torture until those little bars came up and the words Telstra Mobile beside them appeared. You ROCK. For anyone reading this from Australia, it works for our networks too.
