Gamers, at some point, do like to record their in-game videos so they can show it to their friends, upload them on the internet etc. The most popular software to record video games can be Fraps at the moment and is mostly preferred but it’s not free. You can use it’s trial version for some time but that’s about it. There are some good Free Alternatives to Fraps (if you are not looking to buy it) that you can check out to capture your in-game videos.
1- CamStudio

CamStudio is a lightweight free alternative to Fraps that lets records video and audio in your games easily. It saves the video files into AVI format and is completely free of cost. It includes great features like screen and video annotations, ability to compress your files, record/not record audio, custom cursors, free AVI to flash converter and more.
2- Taski

Taksi is another free alternative to fraps that lets you capture either videos or screen. You can map custom keys to start/stop recording making it more easier for you. It captures almost anything on your computer (Including softwares/games using DirectX, OpenGL, or GDI). After recording, it creates an AVI file using VFW codec or still frames in PNG.
3- GameCam

GameCam is a nifty application that lets you record real-time in-game movies, with or without sound. IT works with most DirectX 7, 8, 9, 10 and OpenGL games and features a nice in-game interface with brightness, zoom control etc, audio recording, giving you the ability to take multiple in-game screenshots, system tray launcher and much more.

Growler Guncam can record movies of your games and turn them into AVI format, animated GIF (picture files) and also give you the ability to take screen shots. It focuses more on quality and performance while maintaining a good frame rate of your game. You can easily adjust contrast, brightness and color saturation and much more.
5- WeGame

WeGame is a popular gaming related video portal. They came up with a great utility that lets you record your in-game videos and upload them easily. It’s simple to use and makes your recording much more fun.

Real fraps alternative is only PlayClaw recorder.
http://www.playclaw.com
But that’s not free.
PlayClaw is not FREE…stay on topic brah…
GameCam is not free.
PlayClaw it lags for me
Ati tray tools has a great screenshot app built in it gives you a choice of BMP , JPEG and PNG it also lets you set quality of shot .
ZoneAarm is the best firewall.

I agree with freefraps.
fraps (dot) yolasite (dot) com
I got mine there for free. works perfect, thnx
Most of those are 100% rubbish as alternatives, cam studios is just poor quality all round so don’t bother with it. Wegame is nonsense also, if you want to get Fraps, just fork out the $20 or so, it’s not going to break your bank, and well, at least you will get something worth while on your computer to record with, forget this rubbish listed here. Game Cam is ok, but not free.
Twenty dollars or so? *cough cough*
I was perfectly willing to register Fraps until I clicked the Paypal link and realised they want to charge me no less than $47 AUD. No thank you.
I found this list of alternatives, but so far it appears that Game Cam and Growler Guncam are not free. However, both Cam Studio and its codec are GPL-licensed, so I’m going to try those. (Did you know it’s illegal to use MPEG-4 encoded videos commercially without paying a license fee for the codec?)
Camstudio is awesome, I use it regularly, although its not always best for fullscreen games

It works, no keyges and also edited with a virus scan from virscan.org
This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Beepa PTY LTD.
Yeah, okay thanks.
XD gamecam gives me 27 error messages XD
also theres an ad for a free screen recorder on the side :3
i thought fraps didn’t have sound
I never tried fraps and do not intend to spend for a game recorder. Downloaded Gregion and it seems like a good one.
gregion. com
Gregion site landed on an asian language Malware site. My virus protection stopped me getting on it. Stay away from it.
Thank you thank you thank you @Shoothink , that’s exactly what I wanted!!
Gamecam is not free, you only get 45 seconds worth of recording so stop it..
Just tried PlayClaw and it took 3 attempts to load the game up, and fwiw think the trial versions completely useless with how prominent the watermarks are on both screenshots and video capture. At least Fraps watermark on the video is tiny by comparison and doesnt stamp the screenshots
My problem with fraps was not paying for it, I managed to get a free version. My problem with fraps is the ridiculously huge files. It consumes about 4gigs just for about 10 minutes of recording. Thats fine if you only do 10 minute recordings, but I do large batch recordings then I edit down. I have a good sizable harddrive, but even my 260gb for each drive is swiftly consumed by videos. I’ve got compressors, but it would be nice to find an alternative that didn’t eat your harddrive then take forever to compress
Livestream.com
Run the game as a livestream and you can record them at the same time 100% for free.
Just saying..
With the popularity of Justin.tv/Twitch.tv, I went out of my way to learning how to broadcast…and whilst doing so, played around with a program called “XSplit”.
XSplit is mainly used to Broadcast (downsized quality), but can record locally…pales in comparison in terms of capture quality. File format is .flv, so I’m not sure what you’d use to edit it.
GameCam is not free.
Bandicam is a pretty good program. the free version allows u to record for 10 minutes but there’s a watermark that runs along the top. it honestly is quite similar to fraps but overall i prefer bandicam any day of the week.
So I went through and tested most of these… and wasn’t really happy with ANY. So many outdated, one didn’t record audio, they were glitchy, jumpy video no matter what I changed, caused in game lag, terrible audio quality… aaanyways…
I tried Bandicam after seeing someone else mention it elsewhere on a comparison test with something here (I think it was GameCam) and even though it watermarks and limits to 10 minutes per video segment (which is still better than fraps) that’s more than enough for the everage YouTube recording, and it warns you with a ping when it runs out of time and you can just hit the record button again. I was a bit worried because I saw it had popped up a “Youmust purchase the full version to record more than 10 minute segments” window but it didn’t really interfere with recording whatsoever.
No lag, nice audio quality, has dual audio so I could record from the game, record from my mic, and it even picked up Ventrilo while I was recording so it picked up my conversation with friends over Vent.
