GimpShop is still being promoted? It's outdated by several versions. Besides, Gimp works great on Ubuntu installed, plus they fixed the windowing issue last I used it. I would never install crappy outdated gimpshop on Ubuntu. That was so buggy on Windows. So what is a better choice, taking the time to learn a few things so that Gimp is easier, or use an overlay outdated gimpshop which will crash on you in an attempt to make Gimp easier.

Freemind is nice, but they still haven't done a simple square node, to go with their line and bubble node so images can look better. If they implement that, background image support, full transparency support, ability to reshape node connectors I'll be real happy.

Ubuntu is the most overrated distro ever put out. It’s not nearly as good as its fanbois portray it to be — certainly not moreso than many other distros. Its “success” is all the result hype and fanboi “marketing”.

VYM - View Your Mind is also a good alternative to FreeMind - for mind mapping. It is a native QT application, as opposed to Java app like freemind.
Even though it is QT app, It works well even in Gnome.
Installing is pretty easy, use "sudo apt-get vym" or search for "vym" in Synaptic Package Manager.

It would be good to adjust the title of this article. "15 Essential Ubuntu Productivity Apps" suggest we're talking about Ubuntu developed applications, when in fact none is developed by the Ubuntu team.

Secondly there's a contradiction in stating: "If you want to embrace open operating systems, quit the Microsoft monopoly or the Apple cult, Ubuntu is one of the most powerful operating systems based on the popular open source Linux kernel", and then include Adobe flashplayer even if you between the lines state that this piece of software isn't open source. In its current state the text tell us to quit closed source but that the "beauty" is you can embrace it.

I'm not bashing the article or criticizing the selection, but only suggesting that it's good to evaluate the wording and its context.

Cheers
