MonpwrKeeping your hardware intact is very much essential. There are times when you need to just take off for a while, hoping that your monitor will turn off anyway after the set interval (In case, you don’t shut it down, sleep or hibernate). Here’s a useful utility called MonOff that turns off your monitor with a click on a button. To bring it back, just click the mouse or press the enter key/spacebar.

It works great on desktops as well as laptop/notebooks. Also, Any other keys/mouse jerks will not turn on the monitor, ensuring that it will not accidentally turn on when you leave it turned off.
